Stroll
along the boardwalk and learn about the diverse environments that are
part of Birdsacre.
|
Glade
Remnants of the open meadow environment known to Cordelia Stanwood when
she began her bird studies are found here. Native plant species like
New England aster, goldenrod, rudebeckia and blackberry are common in this habitat. Learn
about Autumn Olive, a non native, invasive shrub. |
|
Ledge
Native
blueberries, bunchberries, bracken fern and wild sarsaparilla are
common here. A variety of lichens and mosses also carpet the ground. |
|
Spruce-Pine
Forest
Spruce and pine are the predominant trees along this section. The
natural succession of the forest is for conifers to replace the shorter
lived, shade intolerant hardwood species like aspen and birch. |

|
Sphagnum
Bog
The cycle of death, decay, and rebirth allows nature to constantly
alter and change the garden. Throughout the bog area you will find
stands of jack-in-the-pulpit, violets and buttercups. |

Beyond
the Boardwalk… the Cottage Garden:
In the summer of 2005 work began on the cottage plantings at
the house to bring them back to what they may have been in Cordelia
Stanwood’s day. |
Join a Master Gardener Volunteer
for a guided walk along the boardwalk at various times of the year.
Check local papers for times and special events.
Pick up a copy of the boardwalk self-guiding brochure at the
start of the trail. Stop in the Visitor Center and view the
